Tuesday, September 21, 2010 - 14:04 News: ARROJO @ NY Fashion Week –– Katie Gallagher

Up and coming fashion world phenomenon and friend of ARROJO, Katie Gallagher, is one of our favorite young designers, and we were thrilled to team up for a third consecutive season.

Inspired by her love of running, Katie’s SS 11 show was dubbed “Arena” and took the form of slick and sporty, futuristic designs.  Lead hair stylist, David Colvin, led an ARROJO team that set about complementing each look with a simple sporty hairstyle, and a unique and modern twist.

David’s interpretation was the next generation of the bold, high ponytail:  Clear plastic tubing was custom-cut to create a new kind of ponytail holder, providing a futuristic feel to the hair, one that was the perfect complement to Katie’s own futurism.

David and team used ARROJO set & style spray to prep the hair, then the ARROJO IZUNAMI flat iron to smooth and straighten.  The tight ponytails were finished with ARROJO’s shine spray – for runway bedazzle, glister and polish.

Tuesday, September 21, 2010 - 13:48 News: ARROJO @ NY Fashion Week –– Michael Angel

Known for his use of bold prints, Michael Angel showed a kaleidoscope of colorful yet minimalist pieces, combining silk fabrics with semi-sheer latex coverings to create geometric, eye-catching designs for Spring.

Art Dept’s Dennis Lanni, a seasoned editorial veteran with a laundry list of A-list celebrity credits, was lead hair designer, supported by the ARROJO Artistic Team. “For Michael Angel,” says Dennis, “we didn’t want the hair to take any real estate from the clothing; it was not to touch the clothes at all.  So we decided on a half bob, graphic, sculpted, and masculine.”

All models had long hair and in order to create the faux bobs, the team worked tirelessly to create a braided section underneath the hair – an innovative interpretation of an anchor.  Then the hair was side-parted and slicked back with gel.  The length was rolled underneath and pinned into the braid, leaving the hairstyles still and stationary.

The looks were set into place by wrapping each bob with a hairnet before blow-drying.  Result: slick, smooth styles elegantly crafted into perfect shape. “I really like simple hair and I was so excited that Michael’s team went with this look rather than just a bun or ponytail. This was a really smart take on those types of looks and it looked perfect on the runway,” Dennis concluded.

Tuesday, September 21, 2010 - 13:31 News: ARROJO @ NY Fashion Week –– Custo Barcelona

The flamboyant design team at Custo Barcelona always puts on a dynamic show and this season was no different.  Colorful prints layered on top of colorful prints were decked out with rainbow feathers and fluttering sleeves, creating a fantasy-inspired Spanish wardrobe.

Dennis Lanni, who was also supported by the ARROJO team on the Michael Angel show worked with the designers on a rock and roll bohemian look, and employed some off the cuff styling techniques to make it work.

“We used a mixture of water and iodized table salt and sprayed the roots with that to build volume,” says Dennis.  “Then we used a big fat curling iron and rolled the length of the hair up. Next we wrapped it around tissue paper to set.  We did this instead of curlers because it gives a little more bend to the hair. After makeup was done, the tissue paper came out and we teased the top of the hair to give it a strong presence, a sort of fuzzy look with natural, slept-on looking flyaways.  The African American models wore chopped up bob wigs, to give the same feel as the models with longer hair.”

Tuesday, September 21, 2010 - 13:21 News: ARROJO @ NY Fashion Week –– Araks

For a brand known for lingerie, Araks apparel collections are lauded for clean, delicate lines with elegant tailoring.  Inspired by Dutch farm dresses from the early 20th century, this collection felt like vintage, and peaked with sheer layered chiffon shift dresses that epitomized Araks phantasm.

Putting together a look to perfectly compliment Araks vision, celebrated editorial (and ARROJO) stylist, Dennis DeVoy, took the lead for this show. “My take,” explains Dennis,  “was to make it discreet and simple; played down with an easy ponytail, but interesting as well as a little off by making the back of the hair look dry and slept on.”

To get the texture Dennis speaks of, the team started with side parts, before slinging the ponytails slightly off of center.  Next, carefully constructed bobby pin placement, into the figure eight, and a diamond-shaped sectioning pattern were used as the hair was looped messily around hair elastic. Smoothing the ends with a flat-iron was the perfect finish to the styles.

Katie Gallagher: Fashion Week 2010 – The Heart of the Woods and What I Found There.

Katie Gallagher’s handcrafted designs are some of the most desirable in the city. Inspired by a feral wild child, fresh out of the woods, this collection of rocker-like fashion for fall 2010 was another astute example of her modern design aesthetic; and with David Colvin, for ARROJO studio, hairstyling, every accent proved the perfect fit for the collection.

Models sported exaggerated, messy, wispy-textured hairstyles. In a nod to the trend in fashion for artificial hair texture, David used a crimping iron to create an ethereal base of weightlessness through the roots, fading softly through the ends, giving the hair gentle, yet defined, undulation.

Binetti: Fashion Week 2010

Inspired by the Far East, its culture and ancient landmarks, this collection is luxuriously over the top yet delicately refined, and made for the woman who loves passion, culture, intellect, and a fresh take on modern day beauty.

Created by Amanda Jenkins, ARROJO studio master stylist, hairstyles hinted at the androgynous, but stood out for glossiness, slick side parts, and pompadours from the front. With more complex styling in the back, models wore ponytails with the ends secured, or braids styled in three strands, fishtail or rope––all effecting the charm and allure of the chignon bun, with added shine, glister and bedazzle.

Thursday, July 9, 2009 - 20:27 News: SHOW report: At NY Fashion Week, ARROJO Supports a Cast of Emerging Design Stars

It started with the most talked about night heading into Fashion Week: Fashion’s Night Out. As part of various citywide events, we hosted a night sure to make fashionista’s look and feel fabulous as they prepared for the copious Fashion Week photo ops. We gave free blow-dries, bang trims, styling sessions or anything else the hair, or heart, desired. We premiered two new products––ARROJO Set & Style, ARROJO Hydro Mist––and picked and chose products, tailored to each guest’s personal fit. According to racked.com, it put us on the top ten list of Fashion Week freebies!

Next up, we sponsored iFashion Week{end}. The event, held by iConcept Media is in support of emerging design stars. We were there to provide product and style the hair for the first annual fashion show for tomorrows Fashion Week A-list. Held at Gotham Hall, and with notables including Kenley Collins and Terri Stevens of Project Runway fame, it proved a high energy, fun look into the future.

And with many of the world’s great hairstylists plying their trade at ARROJO studio, we were asked to session style for some of the most anticipated runway shows, including:

Katie Gallagher: Placed on Kate Lanphear’s illustrious Elle Magazine NY Fashion Week Top Five, Katie’s first Fashion Week showing presented veils, drapes, and lots and lots of black; it was goth and glamorous in measure for measure. Hair, styled by David, Chuck, Ashley, and Lauren from ARROJO, featured soft, casual, low buns in the back, and slicked back, harder, rocker styles from the front––the perfect way to put the emphasis on Katie’s hand-crafted designs.

Alisha Trimble:
An emerging star, Alisha’s called her new line of lingerie, Blanche DuMois. Inspired by the work of Tennessee Williams, and his symbolic use of white, her transparent and opaque shades of nude caught the raw-nerves and delicate sensitivity for which he is famed. It was an alive and beautiful collection. The romance was enhanced and characterized with classic loose, undone messy buns from ARROJO stylists, Rea, Mazja, Katie, and Julia.

General Idea: One of the hippest, most-fashion-forward events of the week (as proven by an audience including Men.Style.com, GQ, Details, Vanity Fair, Nylon, Flaunt, MR, Paper, and Rag & Bone designers Marcus Wainwright and David Neville) was the new collection from uber-trendy General Idea. Targeted at men who aren’t afraid of leggings, shorts, strap sandals, or drop crotch pants, the mostly black and white collection looked right on trend––as did the hair. Styled by Chuck, Alexis, Rea, Mazja, David, Emily, and Lauren, all from ARROJO, the classically shaped, slicked back men’s styles were the perfect compliment for these urban aficionados.

Love Brigade: ARROJO stylists Nicole, David, Lee, Tatum, and Esther were invited to hairstyle for acclaimed Brooklyn-based label, Love Brigade. And with 26 models and nine scenes, representing various forms of ‘revival,’ from modern glamorous to understated everyday wear, they were put to serious work. It was well worth it, though, as the stunning presentation produced a series of entrancing experiences, ranging from a drive-in car scene to a posh living room cocktail party.

Of course, being hairdressers, we love to party! So we couldn’t resist the chance to sponsor the most sought after MTV Video Music Awards viewing and after party. Held at Angels & Kings, the celebrity hotspot owned by Fall Out Boy bassist, Pete Wentz, the night included appearances from VMA nominated bands Fall Out Boy and Cobra Starship. We gave away goody bags and set up styling stations that took bathroom trips to a new, stylistic level. A great occasion, we had several beverages, too!
